FAQ’s

What is evangelism—and is it just preaching at people?

Evangelism is simply sharing the good news of Jesus. It’s not about preaching a sermon on a street corner or trying to “win” a debate. It's about helping people see who Jesus is through your words, your story, and the way you live. Most of the time, it looks more like a conversation than a presentation.

What if I don’t feel ready to share my faith?

You don’t need to have it all together or know all the right answers. If you’ve experienced Jesus in a real way, then you already have something worth sharing. In fact, the more honest you are about your struggles and doubts, the more relatable you become. God works through imperfect people on purpose.

How do I bring up Jesus without sounding pushy?

Start with relationship. Ask good questions. Share your own story when it feels natural. In a city like LA, where people are spiritually open but skeptical of religion, realness matters. Let people see Jesus in how you treat them, then trust the Holy Spirit to open the door for deeper conversations.

What if I say the wrong thing—or someone shuts me down?

That happens. But saying something imperfect is better than saying nothing at all. You’re not responsible for how someone responds—just for being faithful. Jesus never asked us to be impressive, just available. Trust that He can use even your awkward moments.

Are there any resources or training that can help me get better at this?

Yes! At CityLight, we regularly offer Studies, Groups, and update this webpage to help you grow in confidence and clarity when it comes to sharing your faith. You’re not in this alone—we’re here to help you take the next step, whatever it looks like. Feel free to check out our previous Studies to learn more about this subject.

How do I share my faith at work or in professional settings?

You don’t have to stand on a desk and preach. In most cases, sharing your faith at work looks like showing integrity, doing excellent work, and caring for people around you. If someone’s going through something, you can offer to pray or share how your faith helps you navigate life.

Is it okay to invite someone to church instead of explaining everything myself?

Definitely. Inviting someone into a community where they can experience Jesus through people, worship, and teaching is a great first step. Sometimes, your invite is the seed. And we’ll do our part to help water it when they show up.

What if someone already believes in “something spiritual”—should I still talk about Jesus?

Yes, but gently. A lot of people in LA have a mix of beliefs or have been burned by religion. Lead with curiosity. Ask about what they believe and why. Then share how Jesus has been real in your life—not as a debate, but as an invitation.

How do I know when it’s the right time to share?

There’s no formula. But usually, if someone’s opening up about pain, purpose, or big life questions, that’s a good sign. Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom, and stay sensitive to what the moment needs. Sometimes, the right time is now. Sometimes, it’s later. Be patient.
